Born in Poznán, Poland

Move to Breslau

Studies at the College of Arts and Crafts Breslau and the Art Academy Breslau with Otto Mueller, founded the group „Junge Gruppe“ with writers and actors

1926

Start of work as a press drawer

1928

Move to Berlin

1929

Member of the Association of Revolutionary Visual Artists of Germany (Assoziation Revolutionärer Bildender Künstler Deutschlands) [ASSO]

1930

Becomes member of the KPD

1932

Chairman of the „Left Cartel of the Humanities Scientists and Liberal Professions“ („Linkskartell der Geistessschaffenden und Freie Berufe“) in Berlin

Escape to Prague, but soon return to Berlin to work against fascism

Detention in Buchenwald concentration camp

1944

First drawings in the concentration camp (with skim and carbon black)

Exemption from the concentration camp, receives the license for the publication of the magazine „Ulenspiegel“

Rejection of a professorship at the Art Academy Weißensee in favor of the work at „Ulenspiegel“

Stage designer at the Volksbühne, the Deutsche Theater, the Komische Oper, the Kammerspiele and the cabaret „Die Distel“

„Ulenspiegel“ is ceased, works from then on for „Neues Deutschland“
