Schon seit dem Spätmittelalter hinterlässt die Italiensehnsucht vieler Reisender aus dem Norden ihre Spuren in der Kunst. Die Ausstellung „Begegnungen in Arkadien – Maler auf Ischia um 1950“ wirft nun erstmals den Blick auf das Schaffen einiger deutscher Künstler, die diese Tradition in den vierziger und fünfziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts fortschrieben. Mit Eduard Bargheer (1901–1979), Werner Gilles (1894–1961), Hermann Poll (1902–1990) und Max Peiffer Watenphul (1896–1976) versammelt die Ausstellung Maler, die im Italien der Nachkriegszeit ihr ganz persönliches Arkadien fanden.
